A Sneak Peak Inside Inside Jill's Office Company Culture - Part 2
If you read our previous post on "How To Create A Company Culture-Part 1" you learned how to create a culture for your company. Now the exciting thing is, we are going to give you a VIP pass on Jill's Office company culture. What we do and how we live it!
When we were first discovering our company culture, we decided to educate ourselves first. We had some ideas on how to make it personal for us, but we needed a little more inspiration to complete the project. There were two really great books that everyone should read - especially business owners - that helped shape our decisions. Many of our company culture and beliefs were inspired by these two books: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olsen and The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor.
1. Be Happy
You may have heard the saying, success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success. We believe at Jill's Office in being happy and doing things that create happiness. If you are having a bad day, we encourage you to do something to cheer you up. For example, we had a employee find a very funny video on youtube, and she sent it to everyone else. We all had a good laugh, and it created a culture of sharing happiness. We all want success in life, and it's important to find happiness first.
If you need some ideas, here are what we like to call our "Happy Habits"
-Each morning, write down three things you’re grateful for.
-Journal for two minutes a day about one positive experience you had over the last 24 hours.
-Do a random act of kindness over the course of each day.
-Exercise for fifteen minutes daily.
-Read at least ten pages of a good book daily.
2. Be Consistent.
It all starts with a penny. Simple daily disciplines (little productive actions, repeated consistently over time) that add up to the difference between failure and success. Jeff Olson explained that if you add just 1 percent of anything (skill, knowledge, effort) per day, in a year it will have more than tripled. But you have to start with the 1 percent.
Simple daily disciplines or simple errors in judgement, repeated consistently over time, make or break you as well. It's important to understand where you want to go, and be consistent every day in getting there. It's easy to have ideas, but the hard part is being consistent in keeping them going.
3. Be Healthy, Wealthy, And Wise.
Want to lose weight? Battling health issues? Maybe even just want a challenge?
Being healthy: It improves your memory, reduces stress, improves productivity, helps you make better decisions, and boosts your brainpower.
Being wealthy: We are so concerned with material wealth while there are many other kinds of
wealth that we should be striving for. The word “wealth” actually comes from two Old English words; “weal” (meaning well-being) and “th” (meaning condition of) which when combined means “the condition of well-being”. Do the things that bring you well-being, and you will then be wise.
One example we did at Jill's Office in being Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise is that the Jills worked toward a challenge we set for them, and they accomplished it. As a reward, everyone received a gym membership. It was a great way to add health into our daily lives.
A goal not written down is merely a wish. We truly believe in goal setting at Jill's Office.
Here are our basic 3 essential steps to achieving a goal!
1. Write it down: Give it a what (clear description) and a when (timeline).
2. Look at it every day: Keep it in your face; soak your subconscious in it.
3. Start with a plan: Make the plan simple. The point of the plan is not that it will get you there, but that it will get you started.
5. Dream Big-Act On It Daily
Vision Boards are super important to us. So important that we have all of our employees create their own vision board to have at their desk. We have them put anything that comes to mind - things they just want, skills they want to learn or develop, dreams that are crazy, places they want to go - and they add it to their dream board!
6. Pursue Constant Development
The wisest investment you can make is to invest in your own continuous learning and development.
Learn by studying and learn by doing-book smarts and street smarts are essential to take it to the next level. Even just 10 minutes a day of something over time can make you an expert. It has been said and studied that 10,000 hours is all it takes to become a true expert at something.
At Jill's Office, we started a monthly book club. We get all the managers a new book to read, something that will hopefully teach and inspire them. They in turn give it to their departments to read. All it takes is about 10 pages a day, and everyone can get through about 12 books a year!
7. Slow Down To Go Fast
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Jeff Olsen explains that time is the force that magnifies those simple daily disciplines into massive success. No genuine success in life is instant. Life is not a clickable link. We have to slow down in order to go fast. Slowing down also helps us focus on our goals and dreams and make sure we're doing the little things daily to accomplish them.
8. Give Back-Go The Extra Mile
We love it at Jill’s Office when our clients are happy and we are happy! Doesn’t it feel good to give back. Even something as simple as saying thank you to a client or co-worker, etc daily can do the trick! We are going to be having a Jill’s Office focus service opportunity to help us give back, and go the extra mile to people who don’t have the opportunities that we have.
9. Show Up
Getting to work, getting to the gym, attending your classes, putting that $10 in the bank, is 80% of the battle. That’s it! Just by showing up, your 80% there. Be present physically and mentally. When you “show up”, you’re already winning the battle. So, 80% of success is just showing up daily! That’s the key, daily.
10. Start The Day With A Win
We all love to win something, and maybe just starting your day with a win will give you the edge to a happier or more productive day. Maybe something as simple as having a quote of the day, being able to answer your emails before the day gets busy, making it to the gym, or even making your bed. Choose what you want to win and do it first thing!
